I am not a mathematician, but somehow costs just do not add up concerning purchase of a Columbia Falls building encouraged by Flathead County Library director.

It is understandable that original site purchasers would be in favor of having someone else, individual or taxpayers, bail them out. There is a tax lien on the property.

Squaring expenses off to the nearest dollar is my method of lazy math. Thus it seems there is some $1 million to pay off building loan, another $1 million anticipated in building repairs, plus city building permit cost, probably another $1 million to remodel for a library and other uses.

That adds up to $3 million. Must remember that pledges made are not cash on hand and may have expiration dates.

Oops, must not forget future costs of building utilities, large lawn to maintain, annual required maintenance, would be paid by taxpayers.

Frankly, it is beyond my comprehension that Flathead County residents would be in favor of their tax dollars being used to buy a building and maintain it in Columbia Falls.

For that matter, it is a question whether Columbia Falls residents, young or aged, would favor additional taxes required for the building.
