LES needs donations for Dr. Seuss Day

Lakeside Elementary School needs more crafting materials for students to make characters similar to the ones found in Dr. Seuss’ books as part of their annual celebration of his birthday on March 2.

The school is looking for items such as old socks, egg cartons, spools, and basically anything that can be covered in glitter, glued together, painted on and made into Seuss-inspired crafts.

Donated items may be brought to the main office at LES.

The students will also celebrate by reading his books with Somers Middle School students and watching “The Lorax.”

“The kids love it, the middle schoolers get to come back to their old school and see the younger kids,” LES kindergarten teacher Coleene Torgerson said. “There’s good social interaction between the two schools.”

This is the 10th year the school has participated in Read Across America’s celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Each year has a different Seuss book as a theme. “The Lorax” is the theme for this year, and is about taking care of the environment.

The students are encouraged to dress in stripes for the celebration. The school is also selling “cat-in-the-hat” hats at the LES office for $3.

“It’s a great way to get kids focused on reading and Dr. Seuss,” Torgerson said. “Anything Dr. Seuss is always fun.”

LES is also seeking art supplies donations for Kesha Metzler’s art classes. Painting supplies, yogurt cups, and microwavable plastic muffin pans for paint pallets are needed for upcoming projects within the school.

The art classes also need small pieces of cardboard to use for sculpture projects.

Art supplies donations can be brought to the main office.
