The Columbia Falls wrestling team had a great week, beginning with dropping conference rival Frenchtown in a Dec. 14 away dual, 60-24. It was the first dual win against the Broncs under coach Jessie Schaeffer.

“It was fun,” Schaeffer said. “The men wrestled well.”

Ike Schweikert stepped up from junior varsity to get his first win for the MatCats.

“He had a big win for us,” Schaeffer said.

The MatCats then traveled to Eureka the next day and won the Buzz Lucey Tournament with five wrestlers taking championships.

In Frenchtown, the MatCats had wins from Shonn Roberts (112), Kaleb Gravelin (119), Seth McCall (125), Josiah Osborne (130), Zayne Brunz (135), Colton Gove (140), Chase Ramberg (145), Ike Schweikert (152), Cameron Peterson, (171) and heavyweight Spencer Ross.

At Buzz Lucey, the Cats had championships from Roberts, Osborne, Ramberg, Vick and Matt Erhart (215).

“This is the best I’ve seen the team wrestle in a long time,” Schaeffer said.

But the MatCats had a setback. Brunz dislocated his elbow in the semifinals at Buzz Lucey and may be out for the season. The team will have wrestle-offs this week to fill the 135 slot.

This week the boys will travel to Libby on Thursday and then have Christmas break off.

“Libby will be a big match,” Schaeffer said. “They’re tough on their home mat.”
