Avalanche knock off rivals in Missoula

| December 18, 2012 10:29 AM

The Glacier Avalanche high school hockey team has been surprising opponents for the past two weekends.

With a roster of only 13 players, the Avalanche traveled to Havre Dec. 8 to play both Glasgow and Havre. On Saturday morning, the Avalanche started out strong with a shutout by goalie Steven Jochen. The team won 6-0 with huge points racked up by Zach Colgrove with two goals and a hat trick and two assists from David Rizzolo.

That same Saturday night, the Avalanche had a tough match up with the Havre Ice Hawks and their huge crowd. The team fought through and won 4-2 with the two goals from both Colgrove and Rizzolo.

The next morning, the Avalanche played the Glasgow Ice Dawgs and crushed them 10-1 with two goals from Sara Craven, Freedom Wood, Drew Markus and David Rizzolo. Along with a goal from Janessa Courtney.

This past weekend, the Avalanche traveled to Missoula to play their rivals, the Missoula Bruins, with only 10 skaters.

Glacier started out strong Saturday night being tied 3-3 after the second period. Unfortunately, the small roster got the best of the Avalanche and they lost 6-3 with goals from Logan Hulse, Janessa Courtney, and Zach Colgrove.

The next morning though, the Avalanche came out strong and ready to play. Even though the 10 Glacier skaters looked overmatched against the 18 skaters of the Bruins, goalie Travis McGill secured a huge shutout victory for Glacier, winning 3-0 against all odds. Colgrove and Rizzolo were the two scorers of the game, Colgrove having two.
