State swim meet draws about 2,000
For a few days over the weekend, Pinewood Park was transformed into a bustling village as Columbia Falls hosted the state swim meet. The Wildcats took fifth out of more than 20 teams in the Aug. 4-5 tournament. Sidney won the meet.
The Cats were led by Colton Babcock, who won the 200 intermediate medley and the 50 backstroke for the 11-12 age group. His time of 2:49.18 in the 200 was a new pool record.
His brother Cooper took second in the 50 backstroke for the 9-10 age group. Logan Stephens also won a state title in the 50 breaststroke for the 11-12 age group, setting a pool record with a time of 37.94.
Tyler Langton had a good meet, taking second in the 200 meter freestyle for the 9-10 age bracket. Zayne Friar also did well with a second in the 50 butterfly for the 11-12 age group.
The boys also won the 200 intermediate medley relay for the 11-12 year old age group while setting a new pool record with a time of 2:34.88.
Overall, it was a big success for the community, league president Courtney Babcock said. Many businesses donated services and supplies. Western Building Center in particular was a big help, donating supplies or supplying materials at cost for the concession stand that was recently built at the pool.
The Norem family was gracious in allowing the use of its property adjacent to the pool, Babcock noted. All told there were 570 swimmers and about 2,000 spectators and family members.
“The experience as a whole was great,” Babcock said.
Many area businesses put out signs that welcomed swimmers. Montana Coffee Traders donated coffee, and Laurie’s Deli also helped out, letting the swim team use its equipment to prepare food. A host of other businesses and volunteers pitched in to make the meet successful.
