Big brother in Glacier Park

While exiting the Sperry Chalet Trail in Glacier National Park on June 21, I stopped to talk with a University of Montana volunteer researcher who was monitoring trail usage.

He informed me that there was an infrared counter positioned to record everyone that passes by. Because these counters can by influenced by birds, animals, etc., the project is installing cameras to ensure each click of the counter corresponds with a person.

Relating to my obvious shock, the researcher tried to assure me that the photos would only be for their use.

I contacted Professor Wayne Freimuna, the head of the project, to express my outrage. Since cameras are everywhere, he said he feels it’s no big deal.

Security cameras in Wal-Mart, however, are a lot different from cameras on Glacier’s trails. I love this Park and resent having my privacy invaded in this manner.

Now as you hike along Sperry Trail, and other trails as well, your picture will be taken and put into a database, all without your knowledge. I am disappointed the Park would allow such action. Is this what a wilderness experience should be?
