Golf course hits ground running

The Whitefish Lake golf course opened on April 13, which is a fairly normal date for the season to start but the warmer weather has generated high numbers of players already. It’s kind of like someone kicked the ant hill and the swarming has begun.

While this is good news for the golf course business, it also spills over to help other businesses in town as tourists begin to converge on Whitefish. The golf course is emerging from winter dormancy in extremely healthy condition.

There was some concern over the winter that icy conditions could harm the turf but we escaped the potential negative effects of a somewhat open ground cover in early winter.

Womens State Amateur in July

During the third week of July this year the Whitefish Lake Golf Club will host nearly 200 participants in the Womens State Amateur for the three-day tournament plus a practice round.

These events are on a statewide rotation schedule and selected courses take turns hosting the various mens and womens state championships. The staff at Whitefish Lake Golf Club has urged the participants to book their reservations early for lodging and encouraged the players to stay and enjoy the Whitefish experience.

Junior golf registration

The nationally recognized Junior Golf Program at Whitefish Lake Golf Club, started by Golf Professional Mike Dowaliby in 1977, has continued to prosper and introduce youngsters to the game of golf. This year the first day of Junior Golf will be Sunday afternoon on May 13 with registration forms available in the Golf Shop or online at www.golfwhitefish.com. We encourage you sign-up early.

The program remains free for all area youth and you do not have to be a member of the WLGA for your kids to participate. All equipment will be provided including clubs as needed for interested juniors. Absolute beginners are welcome and encouraged to join us along with kids that have some golf experiences.

The Whitefish Lake Golf Professional Staff will once again direct and instruct in the program. Information will also be available at the local schools as well. Ages start as young as 6 years old. Help us grow the game and introduce youth to the game of a lifetime by registering your kids in this free program. If you have questions call the Golf Shop at 862-5960.

Season Open Tournament

This year’s season opener tournament is set for Saturday, May 5 with tee times available for the two-person net best ball event. Contact the Golf Shop at 862-5960 to register for the tournament. The entry fee goes to team prizes, closest to prizes and includes a Mexican Theme lunch.
