Wildcats win C-Falls invite title

The Columbia Falls boys track team started the season where it left off last year — in first place. The Wildcats edged Thompson Falls by 10 points to win the Columbia Falls Invitational at home March 31.

The weatherman had called for rain all day long, but the sun had different plans, making it almost a perfect day for track.

The Cats were paced by Derrick Williams, who won the 3,200 with a time of 9:53.22. Basketball standout Luke Kazlauskas won the long jump with a leap of 20-0 1/4, and Daniel Jones won the shot put and the discus with throws of 50-1 1/2 and 149-3 respectively. James Ratzlaff ran well, taking third in the 800 and 1,600.

The meet is largely a warm-up event, where athletes try a host of different events. There were nearly 10 heats for the boys 100-meter event alone.

The Wildkats took fourth. Jinise Osborne was second in the 3,200 with a time of 12:44.41, and teammate Samantha Mundel placed third with a time of 13:04.3. Carley Jo Benda was second in the long jump with a 15-1 leap.

The boys and girls team has a break and then heads to the Flathead Time Trials on April 10.
