Florence McClenahan

Florence Eleanor McClenahan, of Plains, passed away on Aug. 2, 2011, at the age of 85.

Florence spent her childhood in Plains and graduated from Plains High School in 1943 as valedictorian. She married and raised a family of five children before returning to college to complete her education when she was 40.

Florence taught music to children in many schools throughout the state and continued to teach until her passing. She was dearly loved by her students and touched many lives through her music. Her gift blessed the congregation of the United Methodist Church, where she was a member and pianist for more than 60 years.

Florence was preceded in death by her husband David James McClenahan, daughters Linda Webber and Patty McClenahan, brother Charles Brackett and her sister Helen Ann Cole.

She is survived by sister Blanche Richardson, son David McClenahan and wife Susan, daughters Mary Ellen Bartell and husband Gary, Laura Wood and husband Brian; and many grandchildren, nieces, nephews, a large extended family and many friends.

All who knew Florence were blessed to have her as a wonderful mother, sister, friend and teacher. Her graciousness and concern for everyone will be a lasting legacy for all who knew her.

A celebration of life service for Florence will take place at the Bible Chapel, 8 East Combest Creek Road, in Plains, on Sept. 24, 2011, at 11 a.m. It will be a fitting tribute to her musical talent, filled with wonderful music and story telling, followed by a potluck dinner. People are asked to bring their instruments for one last jam session for Florence.
