Boys soccer team still in hunt for first win

The Vikings soccer team is five games into its 2011 season and still without a win after hosting Stillwater Christian on Tuesday and traveling to Whitefish on Thursday last week.

The Bigfork boys’ toughest loss was to the Bulldogs, who beat them 9-0. The Vikes held Whitefish off until the 25th minute, but after that point the Bulldogs scored four goals in the remaining minutes of the first half while holding Bigfork scoreless.

“The boys had a plan going in, and it worked for 25 minutes,” said Bigfork boys soccer coach Keith Koslosky. “Things settled down and then with two minutes to play in the first half the wheels came off.”

The Bulldogs scored in the 25th and 38th minutes and twice in the 40th minute. In the second half, Whitefish put in goals in the 41st, 46th, 51st, 61st and 76th minutes.

“Bright spots included a very nice counterattack executed by Steven Lyon and Austin Gordon with Kyle Thomson available,” Koslosky said. “Kyle Thomson and Tyler Zavala played beyond their years, taking on and holding their own against older and very aggressive opponents.”

Additionally, Bigfork goalkeeper Dillon Hilling gave a promising performance, making nine saves.

“Dillon Hilling stayed courageous and aggressive in the goal despite the lopsided score,” Koslosky said.

One of Bigfork’s key players, sophomore Bryce MacCallum, has been playing at less than full strength this season, as he is recovering from multiple injuries. However, Koslosky said he is seeing signs of improvement from him.

“Bryce MacCallum appears to be working himself into game-ready condition after suffering setbacks with a broken wrist and strained hamstring,” Koslosky said.

During the Vikings’ home game last Tuesday, Sept. 6, it was the first half that proved to be the most problematic for Bigfork. Stillwater scored in the 5th, 7th, 8th and 38th minutes while shutting out the Vikes. Stillwater also scored in the 80th minute to win the game 5-0.

“The guys didn’t give up,” Koslosky said of his team.

The Eagles outshot Bigfork 14-4, and Hilling was credited with six saves.

 Bigfork travels to Columbia Falls on Friday for a 5:30 p.m. game and on Saturday hosts Libby in a 2 p.m. match.
