Whitefish split a pair of away

nonconference games last weekend to keep their record even at

2-2.

Billings Central shutout the ‘Dogs 3-0

on Friday after two early goals put Whitefish on their heels.

Michael Heger scored in the 20th minute and Luke Daly added another

in the 25th to take a 2-0 halftime lead.

Zach Well added a third in the 75th

minute.

Whitefish outshot Billings 12-8 and won

the corner kick battle 4-1, despite being shutout for the second

time this season.

Whitefish coach O’Brien Byrd said

Billings’ fast front line broke down the Dog’s defensive trap for

each of their scores. Otherwise, the Bulldogs controlled the

game.

“Three mental errors let them score,”

he said. “They didn’t have very many chances. We just peppered

their goalie but couldn’t finish.”

Keeper Thomas Clark had seven saves

compared to Billings’ 14.

Saturday, the Bulldogs bounced back

with a solid offensive showing by nipping Laurel 3-1. Sam Donaldson

hit the net twice in the first half to lead Whitefish to a 2-1

halftime lead. Nathan Boone added another in the 50th minute.

Chance Ling had three saves.

“We made some tactical adjustments on

defense,” Byrd said.

Laurel’s lone goal came on a corner

kick.

Byrd says the team has shown marked

improvement since being shutout at Sandpoint.

“It was just a shocker in Sandpoint,”

he said. “We fell apart and learned a valuable lesson that we have

to play with fire and passion.”

“These nonconfernce games have been

wonderful for us to learn about ourselves.”

The Dogs host Bigfork Thursday at 4

p.m. in their conference opener.
