Boys dominate at divisional track

The Columbia Falls boys track team literally ran away with the Northwest A divisional title last week, amassing a whopping 201.5 points in an overwhelming performance for the divisional crown.

Derrick Williams led the charge, winning the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meter races with times of 1:57.84, 4:33.85 and 10:21.36 respectively. He was also on the winning 1,600-meter relay team and took third in the 400.

Anthony Correa took the title in the 200 with a time of 23.39. In the field events, Nate Thompson won the javelin with a throw of 167-6 and the long jump with a leap of 21-3 1/2. His long jump was a personal best.

Daniel Jones won the discus with a throw of 152-4. The Cats also had fine performances from Kodiak Gimbel, who took second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 41.97, and Trevor Wobschall, who took third in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.86.

The girls took fifth place. Jessie Gist led the squad with a second in the pole vault, leaping nine feet even.

"I'm happy with both teams," coach Jamie Heinz said. "The girls did an amazing job. Many of them had personal bests ... the boys dominated."

While the boys didn't set any major marks in times, they did what they needed to do to get to state meet this weekend in Missoula.

They fell just short last year, taking second to Corvallis, which edged the Cats by 11 points. This year, the boys return to the competition with nearly the same personnel. The meet promises to be dramatic and will likely be a showdown against the Blue Devils again.

"Now we need to step up the competition a notch," Heinz said. "I like our chances."
