Lady netters down rivals

Revenging a loss from earlier in the

season, the Lady Bulldogs tennis team dropped rival Columbia Falls

4-3 on May 5. The girls scored wins at Nos. 2 and 4 singles and

Nos. 2 and 3 doubles.

“Our first match against the Kats was a

little disappointing,” Whitefish coach Patrick Dryden said. “It was

a real shot in the arm to defeat them three weeks later.”

Caroline Carbo showed some perseverance

on the court after winning in three sets 6-0, 4-6, 7-5.

“She showed a lot of guts,” Dryden

said. “It’s impressive when a freshman handles that type of

pressure.”

Simone Craft, another freshman, won at

No. 4 singles 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) in a battle with Emma Covill.

In doubles, Lauren Cain and Maggie

Frankino were both strong at defending the net in their 7-5, 6-0

win. Ryan Chauner and Haley Craven won at No. 2 easily in two quick

sets.

Dryden was glad to see Whitefish get a

win over their rivals, saying that it’s the only dual of the season

that matters.

“The rest are glorified practices,” he

joked.

Whitefish ran into a tough team in

Ronan on Thursday, falling in the conference dual 6-1.

“This is the best Ronan team I’ve

seen,” Dryden noted. “We got crushed, which is a little

disappointing, but you have to give Ronan credit. We were too

tentative and content to just get it over the net. We played a lot

puff balls and they got slammed back in our face. Hopefully we

learned from that.”

Dryden has the tough job of narrowing

down the roster this week before traveling to the divisional

tourney. He’s been rotating 17 players and has to trim the roster

to 10.

“It will be extremely difficult,”

Dryden said. “We’ll have a lot of challenge matches.”
