Locals dominate Broken Binding

Blue skies and fabulous course

conditions framed the scene of the third annual Great American

Broken Binding Nordic Race & Tour at Stillwater Nordic Center

north of Whitefish.

Racers in the 48K event made two laps

starting at the warming hut, out along Murray Mile to the

black-diamond rated Hellroaring Highway, across a frozen Murray

Lake and back to the hut. More than 65 mostly local skiers entered

the race.

Whitefish skier Jason Schmidt edged Don

Bauder in the 48K skate by 2 1/2 minutes after pulling away in the

second lap. Schmidt posted an overall 2:26:31. Ryan Dye and John

Gangemi were about three minutes off the pace to finish third and

fourth, respectively.

Glacier Nordic coach Robin Brooks was

the fastest woman on the 48K course with a 2:41:44. Brenda Winkler,

Molly Bruce, Vonda Garcia, Dusty Hosek and Susan Purvis rounded out

the women’s division.

Mark Manning and Kendra Hope were tops

in the mid-distance 32K race, while Glacier Nordic standouts Jack

Steele and Stella Holt each won their division in the 7K.

Race proceeds were donated to the

American Cancer Society in honor of Karen Longhart, who passed away

three months ago after successfully skiing the 32K race in last

year’s event.
