Robert L. Johnson

Robert L. Johnson, 80, of Columbia Falls, formerly of Bemidji, Minn., peacefully passed away Jan. 5, 2011, at the Health Care Center Northwest Hospice in Kalispell.

He was born in Bemidji Oct. 5, 1930, and was the son of the late Ralph R. and Ruby (Maneke) Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Patrick “Chick” Johnson; and grandson, Derek Hedstrom.

Robert is survived by his wife, Mary Jane of 57 years; a  brother, Neil Johnson; six children, Cindy Aakhus, Terri Cannady and Mike, Gary Johnson, Sharon Gavlovsky and Ray, Denise Hedstrom and Gary, and Kimberly Johnson and Daryl; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Robert married Mary Jane Glime in Bemidji on April 6, 1953.

Before retiring to Columbia Falls, Robert was employed as a conductor by the Burlington Northern Railroad in Bemidji, where he worked for over thirty years. In addition, he and his wife owned Bob’s Greenery in Bemidji. Robert was honorably discharged after six years serving his country with the U.S. Navy. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W., American Legion, Eagles and Moose Club. Robert will forever be remembered for his incredible sense of humor, love of family and friends, telling stories, and his great passion for animals and plant life.

A remembrance vigil was held Jan. 11, at St. Richards Catholic Church in Columbia Falls. A celebration of life service was held Jan 12, at St. Richards.

Columbia Mortuary is handling cremation.
