Girls split southern trip

The Columbia Falls girls soccer team split its southern trip last week, downing Livingston 2-1 Friday, but losing to Belgrade 3-1 on Saturday.

Stats for the Livingston game weren't available, but McKenzie Kizer scored both goals coach Greg Trenerry said. She put in one that he said looked like an impossible angle and the other she had a breakaway and then beat the keeper to stick the ball in the back of the net.

The Kats (2-1), were outshot by the Panthers Saturday 17-5 in a bit of a letdown. Keeper Niesha Thompson had 12 saves in the loss.

Trenerry gave Belgrade credit.

"They're a real good team," he said. "They were a little more fit."

He said Livingston was a good team, too, but the field was awful — they played on the football field and it was full of holes and divots. It was also far shorter and narrower than a standard soccer field.

The girls face off against Libby in the conference matchup Saturday at home. Gametime is 1 p.m.

Trenerry said the game plan was simple.

"We need to go out and play hard and win a lot of balls at the midfield," he said.

The boys had a tough road trip south, losing to Livingston 2-0 last Friday and to Belgrade 6-0 last Saturday.

The young Cats team has yet to score a goal this season. Belgrade outshot the Cats 20-6 and scored all six of its goals in the first half.

Goalie Jake Calderwood received a red card in the first game on a foul against a Livingston player. A red card violation means the player is removed from the game and also results in a suspension for the next game.

On the plus side, the games have no bearing on the conference standings.

Complete stats for the Livingston game were not available.

The Cats, 0-3-1, face Libby in a conference matchup at home Saturday at 11 a.m.
