Bigfork’s junior varsity and C squad volleyball teams wrapped up their seasons last week with matches against Troy and Plains.

The JV girls lost 3-1 to Plains on Friday after being defeated in Troy on Tuesday, Oct. 19, 3-1. The C squad earned a 3-1 victory in Troy and did not play Friday when the Valkyries hosted Plains because the Trotters don’t have enough players to field a freshman team.

Against Plains, the JV Vals lost the first set 25-23 before winning the second 25-18. However, they were unable to keep that momentum going and lost the next two sets 15-5 and 16-14.

Tessa Robertson led the effort for Bigfork with six kills and four blocks.

“Being the last game of the season, this was a hard loss for us,” said Treena Mitts, who coaches Bigfork’s JV volleyball team.

In Troy, Bigfork’s JV won the first set 25-23, but lost the next three 25-16, 15-13 and 15-10.

Brittany Schnell led with three aces, Robertson had four blocks and Brittany Schnell was the kills leader with six.

“Makenna Gembala and Shelby Scoggins played a great passing game,” Mitts said.

Bigfork’s C squad started its victory over Troy with a 25-14 win in the first set. However, the Vals let up in the second and lost 25-22. Bigfork won the third and fourth sets 20-18 and 16-14, respectively.

“I was disappointed to see the season end, but was very proud of the team for ending with a victory,” said Trisha Smith, who coaches Bigfork’s C squad.

Robertson also led the C squad in kills with eight. Kasia Love led in aces with six and Thelina Conley had five. Setting duties were shared between Ellessa Henion and Stevi Siloti who had five assists each.

“Of all the teams we were able to play twice, Troy was the only team we had not beat, so the girls were very determined to prove they could compete with anyone,” Smith said. “Every single player has improved so much, and it was fun and exciting to watch them come together as a team. I hope all eight of them continue to play throughout high school. They all have potential to be huge assets to Valkyrie volleyball.”

Mitts said she felt similarly about her team’s ability to improve throughout the season.

“Individual improvements were the most important aspect of our team, and I have seen all of them improve during the season,” she said. “All of their hard work has truly paid off and I have definitely noticed. Over the season we have become a stronger team — more unified — and have exemplified greater team spirit. They continued to exhibit a kind, courteous and respectful attitude at all times. They are truly the greatest bunch of girls, and a true pleasure to be around.”
