Ethel Lillian Carpenter Garpstad
Ethel Lillian Carpenter Garpstad entered into eternal life on Monday, Feb. 22, 2010. She left this world peacefully with her daughter at her side.
Ethel Lillian Carpenter was born on Nov. 29, 1918 at her family home northwest of Walhalla, N. D. Her parents, William and Emily Lee Carpenter, and her grandparents John and Mary Jane (Neilson) Carpenter were some of that area’s first residents and homesteaded in Freemont Township located near the Neumendahl Hills.
Her faith in Christ was developed and nurtured as a member of the Presbyterian Church in Walhalla, N.D., were she was baptized and catechized. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Columbia Falls.
Ethel attended the one room country school near the family farm. She later graduated from Walhalla High School where she was involved in women’s sports and enjoyed playing on the girls basketball team.
Ethel married Clinton Paul Hogan in 1937 and they are the parents of five children. They moved to Columbia Falls in 1951. Ethel moved to the Ione, Wash., area in 1975, which was her home for the remaining years of her life. She spent the last year of her life visiting her daughter in Nevada.
Ethel loved music and was a wonderful dancer. She passed this love of dance to her children and grandchildren. Ethel took great pride in her home and yard. She was an avid gardener.
Ethel loved knitting beautiful sweaters and crocheting afghans. She was an accomplished painter and writer.
Ethel will always be remembered for being such a wonderful mother and grandmother since her family was the main focus of her life. Ethel cherished time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, to which she attributed to her youthfulness and zest for life.
Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, William and Emily Carpenter; four brothers, Thomas, Wilbur, Stanley, and Homer “Mick” Carpenter; four sisters, Velma and Evelyn Carpenter, Beatrice Gendreau, and Gertrude Beaudry; husbands, Clinton P. Hogan, Charles “Chuck” Geer, and Arnold “Arnie” Garpstad; daughter, Joan LaRae Hogan; son, William Albin Hogan; and step-daughter, Candace Rose Geer.
Ethel is survived by two sons: Wayne Clinton Hogan of Hammond, Ind., and Thomas Frances Hogan of Ione, Wash.; a daughter Carlotta Marie (Hogan) Rogers, of Nev.; and a stepson, Bruce Garpstad of Spokane, Wash.
She is also survived by many grandchildren: Rocky Teets of Seattle; Deborah (Hogan) Heuscher of Bigfork; Wayne Hogan of Hammond, Ind.; Joan (Hogan) Meidinger of Fargo, N.D.; Clinton Hogan of Hammond, Ind.; Michelle Hogan of Grand Forks, N.D.; Sandra Hogan, William Hogan, Daniel Hogan, Kristie Hogan, Lisa Hogan, Billy Jo Hogan, Cole Lee Hogan, Thomas Hogan of Kalispell, Chad Hogan, Rusti (Hogan) Newman of Ione, Wash.; Boone Hogan of Ione, Wash.; Lahm Dutro of Las Vegas; step-grandchildren: April Billings, Sheila Orchard, Eddie and Norman Storey, Kaitlyn and Craig Garpstad.
She had many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren include:
A private memorial service and celebration of the life of this cherished mother and grandmother will be held in Ione, Wash.
