Claudia Kinner

Claudia Kinner, 101, passed away peacefully with loved ones by her side May 24, 2010 after suffering a stroke at the Montana Veterans’ Home in Columbia Falls. Claudia was born Aug. 30, 1908 in Lanesboro, Minn., to Soren and Mary Bachman. Her sense of adventure took her to Glacier National Park in 1931. She worked at Granite Park Chalet and often spoke of that experience.

In 1936, she married Basil Kinner, who was a telegrapher for the railroad. Being very patriotic, she and her husband wanted to serve their country. Claudia joined the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC), in 1942. She served as a Stockroom Clerk in Philadelphia. While there, she marched with the first group of female soldiers to participate in a war loan parade. Their goal was to raise money to back up the armed forces.

Claudia and Basil liked to travel and enjoyed the United States, along with excursions abroad.

Basil died in 1981.

Claudia was quite a reader and had a great memory. She was strong-willed and very committed to her loved ones. After Basil’s death, she continued her travels and enjoyed camping and fishing. Claudia was a good role model when it came to being healthy. She loved to hike and walk, which she did faithfully until she was 96. She liked being in the mountains and often commented on the lovely birds and flowers. She also ate healthy food and always said, “Never drink ice water for it is unhealthy.” Claudia shared flowers with friends and always wanted the best for other veterans. She will join her husband in a national cemetery in California.
