Grapplers go 2-3 at Butte duals

The Columbia Falls wrestling team went 2-3 at the Mining City Duals in Butte last weekend.

The Cats lost to AA Billings West, 57-24, Havre 58-19 and Big Sky 48-42. They beat Anaconda 70-18 and Hardin 51-36.

Last Thursday in Dillon, the Cats wrestled in a mixer against Dillon and Sidney where all three teams wrestled in one match. Complete results weren’t available. Justin Whitman, at 125, had a solid week, winning every match but one. Sal Baccaro had a strong week as well. The 119-pounder won every match by pin except for one loss in Butte.

Heavyweight Cody Bartos also had strong performances. Like Baccaro, he also had just one loss at Butte.

Coach Jessie Schaeffer said he was pleased with the team’s overall performance.

“Each dual they progressed as a team,” he said.

The Cats last year lost every dual in Butte, so this season showed a marked improvement.

Freshmen wrestlers also saw some mat time and many of them got their first wins, he said.

“I’m proud of their effort,” he said.

The Wildcats faced Polson away Tuesday night after presstime.

They travel to Eureka for the Buzz Lucey tournament Saturday and then they’re at home Dec. 21 with a dual against Libby before the Christmas break. Wrestling starts at 5 p.m. The Lucey tournament generally features junior varsity wrestlers.
