Velva LaVon Newhouse, 85, of Page, Ariz., passed away Nov. 15, 2010 in Lone Tree, Colo. She was born on June 26, 1925 in Jackson Township, Iowa, the daughter of Albert Jones and Meryle Jones-Wineinger.

LaVon lived with her husband Lloyd, in Hungry Horse for a time before moving to Page in 1967. Prior to moving, Lloyd was employed by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation at the Hungry Horse Dam.

Anyone she knew who ventured to the Glacier National Park area was instructed to bring back copies Flathead area newspapers and the Hungry Horse News. LaVon had a taste for huckleberry jam and syrup.

LaVon and her family lived in Page for more than 40 years. They loved the dam and LaVon looked forward to regular luncheons with who friends who operated and maintained it. She was active in the community.

LaVon will be remembered for participating in Page Attacks Trash yearly, for the sewing and craft classes she taught, for her before-dawn walks around her neighborhood, for the meals she delivered, the homemade bread she shared and the countless lives she touched. She was a self-appointed taxi for those with medical needs, driving them to doctor appointments in Page and Flagstaff. She opened up her home to complete strangers who had loved ones in the hospital. Her contributions to the hospital’s 50th anniversary celebration were greatly appreciated by the staff.

LaVon was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her funeral was held Monday, Nov. 22, at the Page LDS Stake Center. She was laid to rest in the Page Cemetery.

LaVon was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Newhouse, and their son Dennis. She is survived by her grandson and his wife, Tyson and Marie Newhouse and by her great-grandchildren, Alexander and Alaina.
