Alpine Theatre Project will perform “A Grand Night for Singing,” with popular Broadway songs from Rodgers and Hammerstein, at the Whitefish Middle School auditorium on Aug. 12-22 with performances on Tuesdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s work in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s came to define American musical theater. “A Grand Night for Singing” presents these classic songs in fresh new ways. The revue is directed and choreographed by Brian Marcum, a Broadway veteran who has worked on numerous Tony Award-winning and nominated musicals, and includes Broadway performers Jennifer Marcum, Ann Sanders, Melissa Giattino and Luke Walrath. The Flathead National Forest will host a free presentation on the Fires of 1910 on Thursday, Aug. 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the Supervisor’s Office, 650 Wolfpack Way, in Kalispell. The program will include a 30-minute video presentation produced by the National Interagency Fire Center, in Boise, Idaho. On Aug. 20-21, 1910, catastrophic wildfires fueled by hurricane-force winds raced across Idaho and Montana. In just a day and a half, more than 3 million acres of forest burned, and several communities and miles of railroad infrastructure were destroyed. At least 85 people, 78 of them Forest Service firefighters, perished. Flathead Forest fire managers will talk about the fire history of Northwest Montana. The Hockaday Museum of Art will offer its Senior Tour & Tea Day on Thursday, Aug. 12. The three-day Huckleberry Days Arts Festival will take place in Depot Park on Friday, Aug. 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 14, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. More than 100 artists will sell jewelry, pottery, paintings, photography and crafts. The annual Whitefish Lake Golf Association Club Championship is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 14-15. Members of all ages are encouraged to participate in their respective flights for the two-day club championship and bragging rights. Divisions include ladies, men, seniors and juniors, with a derby after first day for the 10 lowest scores for both men and women. The derby is a two-person alternate-shot format, with one of the 10 teams eliminated on each hole base on score.
The Stumptown Hoe Down will take place at the Whitefish Armory Park softball fields on Saturday, Aug. 14, with gates opening at 3 p.m. and music from 4 to 11 p.m. by Tony Furtado, Leftover Salmon’s Vince Herman and Great American Taxi, the Bridger Creek Boys, Craig Wickham and Cannonball. There will be food vendors and a beer garden. No pets or outside alcohol. The event is a fundraiser for the Whitefish Parks and Recreation Department. Tickets are $20 at the gate or in advance at Second Street Pizza, with children 12-and-under free. A free shuttle bus will run from Second Street Pizza to Armory Park from 3:30 to 11:30 p.m.
The Huckleberry Days Bake-Off Contest will take place Saturday, Aug. 14, during the Huckleberry Days Arts Festival in Depot Park. All entries should contain huckleberries — fresh, frozen, jams, syrups, etc. — and be “homemade.” Entries will be judged on appearance, texture, taste and originality in two divisions, commercial and non-commercial. Charlie Adams will present a free 60-minute seminar on how families can earn athletic and academic scholarships to colleges at Grouse Mountain Lodge on Monday, Aug. 16, at 5:30 p.m. Adams is the senior national speaker for the National Collegiate Scouting Association.
