National Emergency Medical Services Week is May 16 through 22. This year's theme is "Count On Us When Seconds Count!" The Lakeside Quick Response Unit wants to invite all our neighbors to join us in celebrating and honoring those on the frontline of medicine. Emergency medicine begins with education and prevention to reduce the frequency and intensity of medical emergencies. Everyone plays a part in that effort.

The Lakeside QRU is holding a kick-off party for EMS Week on Saturday, May 15, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Lakeside Fire Hall. We will be having several activities for our guests. The Flathead City-County Health Department will be there to conduct car seat safety checks and provide child helmet use and fitting information. We will also have information from Flathead CARE on their program "Stop Underage Drinking in the Flathead."

The Elks Club will present their drug awareness program including videos and demonstrations. Blood pressure screening will also be offered for those interested. Last but not least, hot dogs, chips and soda will be provided.

Sliters Ace Hardware has graciously offered a 20 percent discount on materials you might need to properly identify your home and help emergency crews find you in the event of an emergency. Coupons will be available at our kick-off party and anytime from members of the QRU, Somers/Lakeside Fire Department and Rollins Fire Department. Because it is so important that all residences and business have a properly displayed number, one of our members will make a personal visit to advise you if needed. You can contact the QRU at 844-2775, or Somers/Lakeside Fire at 253-9828, or Rollins Fire at 844-2427.

During EMS Week ,the QRU is planning visits to the Lakeside and Dayton schools. This will be a chance for the younger members of our community to learn about Emergency Medical Services in their educational setting. Introducing young people to EMS providers and EMS equipment increases their awareness of safety and prevention issues and helps develop a level of confidence to handle real emergencies.

The Lakeside QRU is very appreciative of the support we get from our neighbors from the Lower Valley to south of Rollins and we want to take this opportunity to thank you. Please come to the party, learn about things that can make your life and family safer, get to know us and the services we provide, and have some fun. See you May 15.
