Not airing Obama speech wrong

To the editor,

I am not certain whose politics is involved in the decision to prohibit the showing of President Obama's message to students in Columbia Falls, but it sure does have a stink about it! And it is one of the most shameful acts I have witnessed in what is supposed to pass an excellence in public education here in Montana … or anywhere, for that matter.

My question is directed to Columbia Falls School Superintendent Michael Nicosia. What, might I ask, was proven by your taking the initiative to prohibit students in your school from witnessing the President's speech live?

It would appear to me, Mr. Nicosia, that your job as the town's educational leader is to provide first-hand educational experiences to self-thinking students. Or, is it your concern, in company with your minions, to denigrate the students' ability to think for themselves without their parents' approval? What a self-seeking act to place yourself at the head of a mindless mob, if this is the case, where parents are allowed to determine what their kids will learn without the consent of their self-thinking children at some point? Could it be that Columbia Falls people want only mirror images of their lack of thinking ability? What is your school producing … robots? God save America.

Editor's note: District 6 Superintendent Michael Nicosia gave an explanation of why President Obama's speech was not aired live in an article on the front page of the Sept. 10 issue of the Hungry Horse News. Nicosia said the text of the speech was not released until noon Labor Day and school officials did not have time to review it before it was broadcast live. A recording of the speech was aired Sept. 11.
