Streetscaping hailed at real estate meeting

I recently attended a two-day forum sponsored by Newwest.net titled "Real Estate Development in the Northern Rockies." This was the fourth annual gathering of a very diverse group including; economists, developers, urban planners, environmentalists, Realtors, architects, engineers, philanthropists and others. The focus of this event was to share information about current trends in development in the Rocky Mountain West.

The presenters included an array of talented local, state and national leaders in the various industries represented. The group consensus was that in order to maintain viable economies in small towns in the Rocky Mountain West, it is essential to establish or maintain a positive 'sense of place." Factors noted that contribute to a positive 'sense of place" included downtown revitalization and revitalization of community schools.

All of the facets of the ongoing downtown streetscape project in Whitefish were specifically mentioned as significant in maintaining a positive 'sense of place." The forward thinking leaders of Whitefish are ahead of the curve on this issue. This is not a party issue but an economic issue. Maintaining the positive 'sense of place" is crucial to maintaining the economic viability and desirability of Whitefish which enhances the livability for all residents.
