Boys win tennis divisionals

Whitefish senior Matt Harris captured his fourth divisional tennis title on Saturday at the Western A with a 6-0, 6-3 verdict over Bigfork's Scott Taylor on the courts at Flathead Valley Community College.

"Amazing," Harris said of his divisional success. "Very special."

Harris was undefeated in Class A competition this spring. He captured divisional and state doubles championships last season and was the divisional singles champion his freshman and sophomore seasons.

His latest performance helped the Whitefish boys repeat as divisional champions for a fourth-straight season. The Bulldogs ran off with team honors, totaling 58 points in the three-day event. Bigfork and Columbia Falls tied for second with 27 each.

"We have some great players this year," Harris said. "Just like the last couple of years, we've been able to pull it through."

Tanner Hosek came in third place in singles play, defeating Libby's Alex Cislo 6-4, 6-3. Matt Whitehead and Zachariah Deister placed second in doubles play, losing to the Columbia Falls team of Grant Getts and Jake Ronish in the championship match, 6-2, 6-3.

The Lady Bulldogs came in fourth overall with 22 points. Polson won with 62, followed by Libby at 40 and Bigfork at 28.

Kate Klundt came in third in singles play by defeating Jade Bosic, of Bigfork, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. Anne Miller and McCara Cullen lost to the Polson doubles team of Heather Mathison and Kelsie Jones in the battle for third place, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, taking fourth.

The boys are the defending state champions. The top-four divisional positions go to the state tournament, which will take place this year at FVCC and The Summit tennis courts on Thursday and Friday.

"If the boys play at the top of their game, they have a good chance of defending their state title," boys coach Kathy Cummings said.
