Bigfork High School's boys and girls tennis teams had a busy week as they played four schools. The girls won all four matches and the boys won two of theirs.

"It was a great week of competition against some solid athletes and schools," said BHS Assistant Tennis Coach Matt Porrovecchio. "Different than most weeks, we had a lot of matches. While we would have liked to have had a couple of more practices, I think the challenges of back-to-back meets is good for our players in preparation for tournament time."

The girls beat Columbia Falls 6-1 last Thursday, Whitefish 5-1 Friday and Corvallis and Hamilton on Saturday 4-3 and 5-2, respectively. Kelly Deaton, who plays in the number two spot for Bigfork, helped lead the way, winning all three of the matches she played. Deaton beat Columbia Falls' Marissa Getts, 6-2, 6-2, Whitefish's Merideth Reed, 6-2, 6-2 and Corvallis' Jordynn Cheeney 6-2, 6-0.

Elyse Myers, who typically plays in the number three singles spot, had a perfect week as well. She even filled in for number one singles against Hamilton and defeated Mary Conwell 6-1, 6-3. In number three matches this week she beat Corvallis' Lauren Phinney 6-4, 6-4, Whitefish's Courtney Wilder 6-1, 6-1 and Columbia Falls' Natalie Law 6-4, 6-4.

Bigfork's number one and number two doubles girls duos were undefeated this week as well. Nicolette Peterson and Hannah Barrett had victories over the number one teams from Corvallis, Ali Vierer and Anna Adolphson, and Columbia Falls, Steph Raymond and Shelby Hobbs. In the Corvallis match the girls won the first set 6-0, lost the second 6-3 and won the third 6-3. Against Columbia Falls they won 6-4, 6-2. Peterson and Barrett played in the number two doubles spot against Hamilton and defeated Laura Cornelisse and Stella Quinlan, 6-2, 6-2. They also beat Whitefish's number two team Becca Rozar and Chelsi Birgensmith, 6-1, 6-2.

Also playing doubles for Bigfork, Ariana Shults and Jenn Wirth played Hamilton's top team, Rebecca Hankel and Kim Lamar, and won the first match 6-4, then lost the second 7-5 and won the third 6-2. Whitefish's number one team of McCara Cullen and Caroline Stokes also lost to Shults and Wirth. The Bigfork pair won the first set 7-6, lost the second 6-4 and won the third 6-3. They also beat the number two team from Corvallis, Katie Kerner and Kayla Ralls, 6-4, 6-2 and defeated Columbia Falls' number two team Lauri Burgi and Pepper Borland, 6-0, 6-2.

The boys beat Columbia Falls 5-2, lost to Whitefish 4-3, beat Hamilton 6-1 and lost to Corvallis 5-2. Freshman Colter Mahlum led the way for the Vikes with the only perfect record this week for the Bigfork boys. Playing in the number four spot, he won his match against Hamilton's Bubba Gueldenhaar. Mahlum lost the first set 6-4, but came back to win the next two, 6-4, 6-3. He beat Corvallis' Turner Zsupnik after winning the first set 6-2, losing the second 7-6 and winning the third 6-4. Mahlum took the shorter road earlier in the week, beating his opponents without a tiebreaker. He won 6-4, 6-0 over Anders Hanson from Whitefish and 6-3, 6-4 over Ken Spencer of Columbia Falls.

This is the last week of regular season play for Bigfork. They hosted a match against Polson on Tuesday and the results will be in next week's Bigfork Eagle. Their last match before next weekend's divisionals is at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, in Bigfork against Ronan. Divisionals is May 14 through May 16 in Kalispell.
