A Pennsylvania man drowned in Glacier Park's Swiftcurrent Lake early Tuesday morning after the canoe he was in flipped.

Glacier officials identified the man as James R. Greene, 22, of Harrisburg, Pa.

Greene was canoeing with Joseph "Clay" Nelson, 29, from Spring, Texas, when the canoe capsized about 3 a.m. Nelson swam to shore, but Green didn't make it.

Park Rangers were notified about 3:30 a.m.

Greene's body was found in about eight feet of water about 20 feet from shore shortly before noon. He was a former Glacier Park Inc. employee. The investigation into the exact cause of the incident is continuing.

Weather at the time was in the mid-40s and it was not raining. About 20 Park Service employees were searching the area for the man Tuesday and a helicopter had been requested, but poor weather was keeping it from flying and was never used.

Swiftcurrent Lake is a small body of water in front of the Many Glacier Hotel and is popular with boaters and fishermen.

Drowning is the No. 1 cause of death in Glacier according to Park statistics. More than 50 people have drowned in Glacier since the Park began keeping records in the early 1900s.
