WEB UPDATE: Vals beat Polson in low-scoring game

It was a slow, low scoring game Tuesday night when the Bigfork varsity Vals hosted Polson, but they still managed to boost their conference record to 3-1 (7-3 overall) when they knocked down the Lady Pirates (6-6, 3-3), 38-25.

The Vals defense came out strong in the first quarter and held the Lady Pirates to just two points, which they weren't able to put up until the final minutes of the period. Meanwhile Bigfork's Mallery Knoll and Roxy Thurman each scored four to give the Vals a six point lead at the end of the first quarter. Bigfork was outscored 15-8 in the second quarter and allowed Polson to take a 17-16 lead at the half. The Vals had another strong quarter in the third, putting up nine points and holding Polson to just two again. The fourth quarter was riddled with fouled shots for both teams. Bigfork scored just two field goals, and Polson had only one, in the final period. However, Bigfork shot 15 times from the line in the fourth and made nine of their shots. Polson shot 12 times and made four, which resulted in the Vals outscoring them 13-6.

Thurman was the high scorer of the game putting up 14 points. She also had seven rebounds, four steals and four blocks. Knoll scored nine points and made four steals. Kailey Fierro was the Vals leading rebounder with 14 boards, and she also had five assists and three blocks. Peck had four steals and contributed five points, after making five of her six free-throw shots in the second half. Caitlin Charlebois was three-of-four from the line, and had a total of five points.

Bigfork's junior varsity and freshman girls basketball teams did not leave the court as well off as the older girls. The JV lost 63-24 and despite making a comeback late in the game the freshman lost to Polson as well, 39-32.
