Whitefish High School has lost a much-loved student, son, brother and friend. Derek Martin, a student at Whitefish High, passed away on Dec. 10. Derek was a senior planning to graduate in June and attend college in the fall of 2010.

Derek was loved by students and staff alike. Many knew him as the young man with a constant smile on his face, a student willing to accept challenges while maintaining a positive attitude. His sincere and cheerful manner, rare among many of his age, will be missed within the halls of Whitefish High.

Although we cannot fully understand the circumstances surrounding Derek's passing, this tragedy reminds us as a student community to be more cautious of how we interact and care for others. It is not without its lessons about love, acceptance, and true listening. It reminds us of the importance of possessing an open heart and acknowledging everyone unselectively. These are things that we should always practice on a daily basis, regardless of the current situation.

As a community, we can continue to embrace our students in a positive manner and support them in every endeavor. We also can continue to praise and encourage in a non-discriminative manner and acknowledge the fact that all Whitefish students are unique and outstanding individuals.

As parents, we can equally guide and promote with open minds and hearts. We can be willing to listen to our children while also allowing them to be themselves in a safe, comfortable environment.

Most importantly, as students and friends, we pledge to show kindness and love to others. We will acknowledge everyone, looking past differences and manners, and will practice supporting each other in every way.

We can continue to embody this philosophy through the many student clubs and activities at Whitefish High School that strive to promote a comfortable learning environment.

Whitefish High School and its surrounding community have come together in the past two weeks to mourn this tragedy. This supportive togetherness is an example of what our community has to offer. Let us continue to encourage each other and our students with this support, not only during this difficult time, but consistently in the future as well.

On behalf of the students of Whitefish High, I extend my most heartfelt sympathy to the Martin family and all within the Whitefish community. Derek Martin touched the lives of all around him, and his presence will be sorely missed by all at Whitefish High School.
