Grapplers show progress

The Columbia Falls wrestling team is coming into form as the season progresses. The middle needs a little work, but the ends are doing pretty darn well.

Senior heavyweight and 215-pound wrestler Kelly Houle went undefeated over the weekend, as did Jarrett Smith at 152.

Sal Baccaro at 112 lost just one match and Justin Whitman at 119 and 125 also had a good showing after making some adjustments.

But as a team, the Cats didn't win a dual at the Mining City Dual tournament in Butte, going 0-5.

"We're pretty young in the middle of the lineup," coach Jessie Schaeffer said. "They need more mat time and experience. They need to step up the intensity."

With 12 sophomores and nearly all of them are in the middle weight classes, "we're running on four cylinders right now," Schaeffer said.

On Tuesday the Cats had a triangular with Libby and Polson. The reason for having three meets rather than just a dual is to draw more fans, Schaeffer said. It also reduces the number of weigh-ins for the wrestlers. A triangular only counts as one weigh-in, he said, and a wrestler is limited to 18 weigh-ins before the post season.

Houle had two pins against his Libby and Polson opponents. Whitman, Baccaro and Smith also had a solid night. Baccaro pinned Libby's Levi Edwards and Whitman pinned Aaron Seefeldt. Smith had a pin against Polson's Jake Skeleton. Seth McCall had a pin against Pat Sumner of Polson at 98, but got pinned by Ian Edward of Libby.

Overall, the Cats had too many wrestlers on their backs, and they lost to Libby 57-28 and Polson 57-26. The middle of the lineup just gave up too many points — mostly by pins.
