Girls drop two at tip-off tourney

The road wasn't kind to the Columbia Falls girls basketball team as they dropped two games at the Western A Tip-Off tourney last weekend.

The Kats (1-2) lost to Dillon 47-43 in Polson on Friday and Stevensville 56-42 in Ronan on Saturday.

The team's shooting was ice cold — just over 30 percent from the floor.

Against Dillon, coach Dan Fairbank said "we just let (them) out-hustle and out-rebound us."

Dillon had 18 offensive rebounds for the game and four three pointers in a third quarter comeback, as the Kats led 22-14 at the half.

Kayla DeWit had 20 points and Kelsey DeWit had 10, but the rest of squad combined had just 13 points in the loss.

Things weren't much better against Stevi. Frosh Alycia Sims had 19 points against the Kats as Stevi had a first half lead 32-21. The DeWit sisters had solid games.

Kayla scored 22 points and had 15 rebounds and Kelsey had 11 points and 14 boards, but didn't get much help from the rest of the team.

"We need (other) people to step up and hit some shots," Fairbank said.

This week the girls face Flathead at home Thursday and then Sentinel at home Saturday before the Christmas break. Fairbank said the team will work on handling pressure defenses and do "a ton of shooting," in practice.

They need to get some outside shots to fall to take the pressure off their inside game, he said.

Game time for Flathead is 6 p.m., Sentinel is 5 p.m.
