Fresh approach

| October 16, 2008 11:00 PM

This political season has certainly been exciting. The presidential election itself is on the minds of many here in Montana. It definitely is on my mind.

I've been wondering what I could do to help my candidate, and then it occurred to me that my support would be better served here at home. In our own local county commissioner election, Steve Qunell has a big fight on his hands. He is running against Jim Dupont, a name that everyone here in the Flathead recognizes.

Just because we recognize his name, does that mean we should vote for him? Not if you believe in a growth plan for the Flathead Valley. Steve Qunell wants to take a proactive approach to controlling growth.

For some of you, the thought of planning for growth means restricting property rights. When planning is done correctly, property rights are protected. Steve understands the importance of protecting your rights as property owners.

The bottom line is that growth will happen here. In the 17 years I have lived here, the amount of change and population expansion that has occurred has been phenomenal. And, I think it has only just begun.

We need a county commissioner who is coming in with a fresh approach to this situation. With some insightful planning, we can preserve and protect some of the open spaces we all love so much. As a parent and teacher of young children, I am constantly looking to the future. What will the Flathead Valley look like in another 10-15 years?

Before you cast your ballot, I encourage you to take a moment and visit Steve's Web site www.stevequnell.com and see for yourself what Steve's stance is on all of the issues. You may not know his name, but you owe it to our future here in the Flathead to learn more about him. His vision and knowledge are much needed to serve on the county commission.
