Hall has common sense and class

Flathead County has enjoyed unprecedented economic prosperity over the past few years, but pressing issues on the national level make the next five years crucial for the continued health of our area. Which is why on June 3, I will support Gary Hall for county commissioner.

During his time in office, he has handled very complicated issues with common sense and class.

Flathead County is a fascinating blend of many diverse opinions, and one thing that I have always appreciated about Gary Hall is his willingness to listen to everyone and his willingness to sit down and work towards a solution. Under his leadership the Flathead has prospered.

Despite his experience in law enforcement, several things trouble me about his opponent Jim Dupont.

First, Mr. Dupont is backed by the outspoken "American Dream" coalition. While I appreciate the unique aspect this group brings to public dialogue, I find their unwillingness to consider any viewpoint but their own disturbing.

They may believe in America, but their contentious tactics clog the system, and their my-way-or-the-highway attitude is decidedly un-American. That this group is a close ally to Mr. Dupont is deeply troubling.

Whitefish is still reeling and fuming about the Critical Areas Ordinance, but one thing that has given me hope is that commissioner Hall is still willing to talk with Whitefish officials about potential solutions. Sitting down to talk would not even be an option with Mr. Dupont or his allies.

Second, with an economic slump threatening America both nationally and regionally, we need a leader with experience and understanding of the issues.

Mr. DuPont's repeated emphasis on property rights tells me that he misses these larger issues entirely. I'm not sure what his vision of the Flathead is, but I want more than just increased property rights in my neck of the woods. I'm more concerned with education and jobs.

Finally, if we judge the candidates by their records, then the pitiful state of the county jail leaves much for Mr. Dupont to explain. If his plan to improve roads and help our economy runs parallel to his plan for the county jail, then we are in for a disastrous five years. Under his tenure, the problem of housing an increasing prisoner population was ignored, understated and, finally, left for others to solve.

Commissioner Hall understands the Flathead's complicated issues. And his willingness to work hard for solutions means that there will always be hope for a better tomorrow.

This June 3 primary is critical. Please remember to cast your vote for Flathead's future. For me, that means a vote for Gary Hall.
