Kate Klundt took first place in the No. 2 girls singles bracket at the Missoula Invitational Tennis tournament on Saturday. She defeated Michelle Carey of Helena in straight sets, 61, 6-4 to take the title.

In the No. 1 girls singles bracket, Whitefish star Brielle Menegazzi fell 5-8 in the semifinal round to eventual tourney champ, Liana Bates of Glacier High. Menegazzi won the consolation round 7-6 (7), 6-0 over Cami Mathison of Glacier.

"The team performed well," said head coach Kathy Cummings. "We had some good competition against some Class AA schools."

Whitefish was the only Class A school invited to the tournament.

On the boys side, Whitefish's Renzo Caimi claimed the No. 1 singles title, defeating Eric Braun of Helena in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. The Chilean phenom is undefeated on the season. Caimi took down Wes Mathison of Flathead 8-0 in the semifinals to advance.

"Renzo is a very consistently good player," Cummings said.

In the No. 3 singles bracket, Whitefish's Brendan Viscomi claimed first place, defeating Jesse Cunningham of Missoula Sentinal in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.

Ian Hosek won the consolation round of the No. 2 singles bracket, beating Patrick Phattaraampornchai of Glacier, 6-2, 6-1. Hosek fell to eventual champ Zach Lubek of Helena Capital 1-8 in the semifinal round.

In the No. 3 doubles bracket, Tanner Hosek and Trey Legrandeur of Whitefish took second place. They advanced to the final round, then fell to 3-6, 7-5, 1-6 in the championship match.

The Bulldogs have not had a lot of cooperation with Mother Nature this year so far, as the home tournament against Polson scheduled for Tuesday afternoon was canceled due to rain.

Whitefish beat Hamilton 6-1 (girls), 7-0 (boys) and Corvallis 4-3 (girls), 5-2 (boys) on Friday

The Whitefish tennis squad takes on Columbia Falls away on Thursday (tonight) starting at 3 p.m. for the girls and at 5 p.m. for the boys.
