We owe kids

| March 13, 2008 11:00 PM

We would like to take a moment to express why we are voting yes to the current high school modernization and renovation project.

Number one, we believe there is a defined and serious need to update the current facility. It is outdated. It is unsafe. We are very supportive to providing an environment that is secure and will enable our students to stay on campus during the whole day for a quality education.

Number two, we are fully aware of the current tax situation. The reassessment of our current real estate market causes all of us concern.

City, county and state municipalities have a huge responsibility to us as taxpayers to examine how they are assessing us and how they are spending our tax dollars. Now is certainly a time to unite and hold them all accountable.

It is also a time, however, to be responsible citizens and live up to our obligation to provide for our children and their future.

The cost of this project will never get cheaper. We can wait for five to 10 years and end up paying more for less. Look what the delays have cost the Going-to-the-Sun Road project in our beloved Glacier National Park.

Some have said that enrollment is an issue. We think it is proven that the planning that went into this project has taken a logical and professional approach to the current needs and has provided for the future.

It must also be noted that the North Valley Hospital had 450 live births in 2007. Certainly they aren't all future Bulldogs, but how many will be? The third grade and the kindergarten have very large enrollments. Don't we owe them something?

Someone provided for us, and we intend to support the effort to provide for the future. Join us won't you.
