Smith wins Big Mountain ski climb

The first-ever ski-mountaineering race at Whitefish Mountain Resort took place on Saturday as part of a national championship race series.

The event, which is open to anyone, has roots in European alpinism and attracts some of the nation's best athletes, including the U.S. Ski Mountaineering Team.

The "Race" course highlights some of the ski resort's best skiing terrain, including four ascents and descents with a total vertical of about 4,200 feet.

The "Recreation" course includes two ascents and descents with about 2,500 feet of vertical.
