Things are shaping up well for the Cowabunga! variety show after last week's auditions at the Bigfork Playhouse Theater, according to organizers.

Diana Rahdert said there were more than 20 acts picked out for this year's March show, including some that diverge from the usual song and dance.

"This year something new is that we have some comedic entries," she said.

In addition, Rahdert said the judges broke their self-imposed time-limit rule for one act that Rahdert would only describe as "special."

"Typically we like to see three minutes or less," she said. "This one is quite a bit longer than that but there's something special about it."

Rahdert said judges had to turn away about a third of the contest hopefuls in an effort to keep the show time down.

"A concern for all the shows is that they've been too long so we try to keep that in mind," she said.

This year's show, with the theme "Moo'nar Eclipse," will take place March 14-16, with evening shows on Friday and Saturday nights and a Sunday matinee.

The event is a fundraiser for Friends of Bigfork Schools and Rahdert said they're looking to raise $15,000 through ticket sales and sponsorships.

Any business or individual interested in being a sponsor for the show can contact Rahdert at 250-5594 or Mary Knoll at 249-8576.
