Flyfishing conclave success

| August 21, 2008 11:00 PM

On behalf of the board of directors of the Whitefish Convention and Visitor Bureau, I want to thank the many volunteers who contributed to the success of the recent International Fly Fishing Federation Conclave.

Hundreds of fly fishers from all over the U.S., Canada and Australia were very impressed with our town and the great fishing opportunities in the area. We heard nothing but accolades and expressions of appreciation for the great welcome, wonderful friendly town and fabulous facilities.

Many of the attendees extended their stays or promised to be back next summer which definitely benefits the local hotels, shops and restaurants.

I especially want to thank the Whitefish School District for allowing us to use the high school building and grounds. The local committee worked very carefully with school staff so as to not interfere with any sport camps or practices.

The dates we chose corresponded with the time period when coaches are not supposed to have contact with athletes prior to the start of fall sports practices.

Once the conclave ended, the school could refinish the floors in time for the fall sports. Fortunately, we have outdoor courts that allow students to get out and play.

Special thanks to the local committee, Jan Metzmaker, Rachel Vandevoort, Jerry Smalley, Stu Allen, Steve Thompson, Erin Sprunger and Jim Johnson, for all their efforts that contributed to a very successful event.

Many local venues were used and we thank Whitefish Mountain Resort, Great Northern Brewing, Moose Lodge, Lodge at Whitefish Lake and Lakestream Fly Fishing for their assistance.

Thanks again for a wonderful event and the many individuals who contributed to its success.
