Vals take first at Bigfork Invitational

By FAITH MOLDAN / Bigfork Eagle

Maybe it was the sunshine that put a little skip in Garrett Pewe's step on Saturday at the Bigfork Invitational.

The Bigfork High School junior cleared 5-feet-10-inches in the high jump at the Kalispell Time Trials earlier in the week, but added another four inches to his jump at home. He cleared 6-2 before attempting and missing at 6-4, the height that eventual first-place high jump finisher Seth Wright of Libby cleared.

"We finally had nice weather," Bigfork coach Sue Loeffler said. "Everybody competed really well."

Pewe also placed in the 400-meter run on Saturday. He and teammate Bobby Denning finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in times of 55.25 and 55.63. Pewe was part of the Vikes' 400-meter relay team, which placed fourth in Kalispell. Bigfork clocked a time of 46.75, beating out Whitefish and Polson. Carson Sneed was sixth in the high jump at the Bigfork Invite with his jump of 5-8.

While Pewe was jumping and running his way to success, Donny Tudahl threw his way there. Tudahl placed in both the shot and discus at both meets. He bettered his second-place discus finish from Tuesday on Saturday but threw a shorter distance. Tudahl claimed second place in Kalispell with 146-3 and won the competition at Bigfork with 138-8. He finished fifth in shot put at both meets, throwing further later in the week. Tudahl hit marks of 40-0 and 42-3.

Stevan Hibbs and Zac Bruer made strong showings at home as well. Hibbs placed in both the 200 and triple jump. He was fourth in the 200 with his time of 24.78 and fifth in the triple jump with 36-1 1/4. Bruer rounded out the competitors in shot put and discus. He was sixth in both events. Bruer threw the shot 40-7 and the discus 110-5.

Defending Class A 100-meter dash state champion Andrew Whittaker used his quickness to take third in the 200 on Tuesday. He finished in a time of 24.17 behind Ian Damon and Mike Kozlowski of Flathead High School.

Bigfork's boys finished their home meet in fourth with 41 team points. Their 1,600 relay team was third with 3:49.38. They were beat out by Libby and Thompson Falls. The relay team consists of Phil Sandry, Pewe, Denning and Hibbs.

The Vikes travel to Libby Saturday, April 19, before the Top 10 meet in Missoula April 22.

Mallery Knoll surely didn't go into Saturday's Bigfork Invitational with record breaking on her mind.

Knoll, a freshman, beat the old 100-meter dash meet record — 12.99 — with her time of 12.78. She finished the event in first place. Knoll tied for third earlier in the week at the Kalispell Time Trials. There, she clocked a time of 13.62. She completed a trifecta of sorts in Bigfork, placing second in both the 100-meter hurdles and 300 hurdles. Both meet-records fell in those events as well. A total of 10 meet records were broken on Saturday. Knoll clocked times of 16.12 and 48.61 in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles respectively.

"Mallery had a great day of course," Bigfork coach Sue Loeffler said. "It was her first time running hurdles (in high school track)."

At the Bigfork Invite, Jenna Egdort was fourth in the 100 with 13.3. Egdorf was also fifth in the 200. She finished in 28.53.

Quinci Paine added to the young Vals' success. Also a freshman, Paine was three seconds shy of first place in the 800. She finshed in 2:36.04. In Kalispell, she took sixth place in the 400. She finished that race in 65.23. Paine's javelin throw of 91-10 put her in fourh place in Bigfork.

There was no stopping, or catching, Kayla Carlson all week in the distance events. She took nine seconds off her 1,600-meter time between meets, clocking first a 5:43.08 in Kalispell (third place) and then 5:34.06 at home for first place. Carlson finished the 3,200-meter run nearly a full minute ahead of the rest of the pack with 12:28.17. She was also sixth place in the pole vault at both meets. She tied for sixth with 7-0 at the Kalispell Time Trials and cleared six more inches in Bigfork.

The upperclassmen also finished well throughout the week.

Hattie Bowen cleared 4-10 and 4-8 in the high jump for fifth place at both meets. Track newcomer Alyssa Fierro won the high jump in Bigfork with her jump of 4-10.

Charlene Miller and Cecily Whistler placed in the javelin and discus, respectively. Miller was fourth in the jav in Kalispell with her throw of 96-7. Whistler finished sixth in the discus with 83-8.5.

The Vals' 400-meter relay team knocked almost a second off of its time during the week. Bigfork was sixth in Kalispell with 54.38 and third at home with 53.72. The team consists of Jill Hamilton, Egdorf, Bowen and Knoll. The Vals finished Bigfork Invitational with 84.3 team points and first place. The 1,600-meter relay team finished fourth on Tuesday. The Vals — Paine, Lena Olsen, Hilary Bilodeau and Egdorf — clocked a time of 4:31.29.
