Safeway lesson

| June 14, 2007 11:00 PM

I want to thank the White-fish City Council for protecting us from the prospect of a remodeled store. Who knows better than bureaucrats what the residents want or need? After all, Safeway has only been in Whitefish for several decades.

Why do we want the millions of construction dollars to be spent? Why do we need more good-paying jobs with decent benefits? Those working at two or more service-related and seasonal jobs probably do not want a regular job and paycheck anyway.

It is comforting to know that our councilors are experts on design, architecture, retailing and construction. It is also comforting to know that our mayor is in Asia and cannot contribute.

Retail stores have a back of the building and larger ones have a loading dock. It is great that our councilors each have an opinion on how these should look and be designed.

What is better than several different opinions and the input from the Architectural Review Committee to confuse this large Safeway Co.? That will teach them to deal with small-town bureaucrats.

Keep up the good work councilors.
