What noise?

| August 2, 2007 11:00 PM

Flipping through the newspaper the other day, I stumbled upon a section which is usually overrun with zoning issues, resort tax increase proposals, and housing development approvals.

But on this day, the review of the city council meeting contained something quite different. It seems that a citizen complained about "thumping mega bass" at a block party on the 100 block of Columbia Avenue.

I do agree that every citizen has a right to his/her own opinion, but I also believe that there are far more important things to be concerned about for a number of reasons.

For one, this complaint was concerning a party which happened a month ago. Secondly, all of the rules concerning the city's special events permit were obeyed in full compliance. The party ended promptly at 10 p.m. and the music stopped.

In addition, the two officers who came to the party did not think that the speakers were being a public nuisance.

Last of all, I attended the party, sponsored by Chronic Don Productions, and found the music to be quite enjoyable. The band played good music and definitely was not too loud.

Now the city council is considering action on the special events permit process to quite possibly make it more difficult to obtain one in the future.

This sounds like a case of one person ruining it for everybody. In a world where people seem to have forgotten how to have fun, it isn't often that you see an event bring people together in such a way.

Either way, I'm sure the Chronic Don Block Party will live to see another day.
