Crews making good progress on Sun Highway

| April 4, 2007 11:00 PM

Crews on the west side of Glacier National Park are making good progress on plowing the Going-to-the-Sun Road, but crews on the east side were hampered by lousy weather Monday and Tuesday.

On the west side, a single lane was pioneered as far as Packer's Roost by late Tuesday and two lanes were plowed to Logan Creek.

Crews were using the rotary plow, a front-end loader, two graders and a plow truck.

The Park on the west side saw four inches of new snow Tuesday. On the east side blizzard-like conditions kept crews busy just trying to keep normal plowing up, said Park spokeswoman Melissa Wilson.

The road is closed at Lake McDonald Lodge on the east side, though you can hike and bike to beyond Avalanche Creek during work times, farther, when crews aren't working.

The weekend could see temperatures near 70, which could open Park roads further.
