Sign destruction

The destruction of dozens of Swan Lakers signs along Sunburst Drive the night of Aug. 12 was an act of cowardice. These signs were located on private property and articulated personal opinions. This vandal, or vandals, attempted to intimidate and invoke fear while lacking the character or courage to be seen or to be heard.

Those of us who oppose the Milhous Condominium plan have stood up in public meetings, at Planning Board hearings and at Commissioners meetings, signed our names on the public record and announced our position civilly and with respect to the process. We have done so, at times, to the great sacrifice of our personal and business endeavors. We have done so knowing that there is sacrifice where there is conviction.

Whatever person (or persons) slithered under cover of darkness, lacking the spine to be seen or heard in the light of day, deserves the scorn and shame of our entire community - both those who oppose the Milhous Condominiums plan and those who support it.

It is cruelly ironic that this cowardly act took place now, when our brothers and sisters are fighting and dying across the world to preserve our freedom of speech and our right to challenge our government's actions.

The Swan Lakers will not be intimidated by thugs. We will continue to stand in the light of day and pronounce our opposition to what we believe is a condominium development and County Commissioners' actions that threatens our community.
