Our freedom and money

Our freedom and money seem to be at risk every time the state legislature meets. Our quality of life is directly dependent on our freedom and the dollars in our pocket.

Freedom: Liberals are attacking our property rights, gun rights, water rights and access to public lands in exceptional ways unprecedented in our history. As your senator I am prepared by my four terms in the House of Representatives to fight for your individual liberties and to take on the present liberal attitude of limiting personal freedom in favor of some hazy "greater good."

Money: Following the last regular Democrat-controlled session of the Legislature, we learned that there was $300 million in excess taxes after the budget was funded. This so-called "surplus" must be returned to the taxpayers. We know best how to spend our dollars. I will work diligently to bring about a return of this "surplus" to our families and I will fight for significant property tax reduction, as I did with success as a member of the House Tax Committee. I will also put every effort into eliminating the "Marriage Penalty," which in my opinion is the most egregious tax ever foisted on Montana's family-oriented society. Married people who file jointly should pay the lowest rate. Strong families are the foundation of our culture. We must protect our foundation if we expect the structure to endure. Good paying jobs are needed to provide income to keep our young families in Montana. Elimination of the 3 percent business equipment tax will put our businesses on a level playing field with surrounding states. The heart of our tourism industry in western Montana is Flathead Lake. We must continue to protect our water rights and the water quality. Also, wise-use of our natural resources and better markets for our business, farm and ranch products should be a priority for the policy makers in Helena. I will use my background and experience to bring about these much needed reforms.

Experience does matter. As I did in the House, I will continue to fight for your freedom and wallet if elected to the Senate. I favor self reliance and a small, efficient government. If you favor individual liberty and a government that provides necessary services while allowing you to spend your money and raise your family without bureaucratic interference, I ask for your vote on June 6.
