Light problems

| November 26, 2005 10:00 PM

According to the Nov. 6 Daily Inter Lake, Whitefish has a light pollution problem. It's so bad, in fact, that a community board has been appointed to look into it.

Great. I'm glad. Anyone who lives near town knows we have a problem, as you can pinpoint locations by the light plume miles away.

I live three miles out of town, and a wooded ridge separates my land from the city. But on an overcast night, I know exactly where Don K Chevrolet is. Right below the glow.

Maybe this board will be a good thing. Maybe they will be able to make some headway in curbing this problem that affects us all. Don K himself is on the board.

This isn't meant to be another "bash Don K" letter to the editor. I'm writing it in the hope that now, maybe, hopefully, please, he will actually do something about the lighting eyesore his lot creates. I mean, he is going to be on the board to look into the problem, right? This might be a good idea after all. You can't pass judgment on others if you're the problem.

About the balloons — loose then all. It's not about the height, Don. Twenty or 200 feet, they're tacky. They are the first thing you see when you enter our town. They cheapen and degrade the image of Whitefish. Maybe we need a board for that, too.
