Message in a bottle

| November 10, 2005 10:00 PM

If you could put a message in a bottle and know that at the end of its journey thousands of people from your own community would read it and ponder its meaning as it applied to their lives, what would you write?

What simple, beautiful truth would you convey if you knew your message could last more than a hundred years? And that it, along with hundreds of other messages, would make up a civic monument?

Not a monument to something lost in our community, or something dead, but a monument to what we love about our lives here in the Flathead, in Montana, in America. A monument dedicated to the democratic principles which bind us — freedom, respect for diversity and social responsibility. In other words, being good neighbors.

Come put your message in a bottle. Bring your family and friends. Come make a tile for the Community Spirit Monument at Woodland Park in Kalispell. It is easy and fun. We will help you express your personal wisdom, humor and ideas.

Meet Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Bohemian Grange Hall behind the Montana Coffee Traders on U.S. Highway 93 south of Whitefish noon to 4 p.m.
