Softball squad struggling, gets blanked by Whitefish last week

The girls of the Columbia Falls High School softball team were running sprints Monday afternoon as their coach, Dave Kehr, shouted instructions and made comments about their last game, a 10-0 five-inning blowout loss to Whitefish.

"We didn't exactly thrive over there," he yelled to the girls. "We cannot finish the season that way."

After mustering only one hit against Bulldog starter Makayla Peck, Kehr said it was a tough loss.

"We've lost that way before," he said. "The girls always fight in there. They do the best they can."

He attributed the loss to a bevy of mental mistakes and a lack of offensive punch.

"We just didn't hit the ball," he said shaking his head. "We made some errors."

"I think we had just a few baserunners," he added. "We've just got to get on base."

Although there were no offensive stars for the Wildkats, Kehr did note a few strong defensive performances, despite the fact the girls committed two costly errors that led to several big innings.

"Stephanie Davis, she did a nice job at short for us," he said. "But you lose 10-0 in five innings, how many good plays could you have had?"

Davis, a senior, also managed to reach base on the Kats' only hit, and Kehr said senior Amanda Puryer also played a nice third base.

"She had a good game," he said. "She was real solid at third."

As for Whitefish, Kehr said they are a good team, one that has a chance to go far in the playoffs.

"They're a solid team," he said. "They hit the ball hard."

He added that in the coming weeks, the team would practice fundamentals to try and curb the mistakes.
