Roy Owen

Roy Alvin Owen, 94, a longtime Whitefish resident, passed away July 8, 2005, at his home of natural causes.

He was born Nov. 9, 1910, in Bisbee, Ariz., the son of Luther and Mamie Owen.

Roy was a professional golfer and stationary pro, and he taught and worked at the Broadmoor Golf Club in Seattle, Wash., the Butte Country Club in Butte, the Hillcrest Country Club in Boise, Idaho, and finally 23 years at the Whitefish Lake Golf Club, where he retired in 1977.

As a pro, he was renowned for his golfing abilities, especially his putting and iron abilities. He set several course records during his career.

He and Gertrude celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary and were working on their 71st.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Gertrude E. Owen, in Whitefish; daughters Patricia Porter, of Laughlin, Nev., and Barbara Cannon, of Woodburn, Ore.; grandsons Robert Porter, Tim Cry and Michaell Cry, all of Oregon; and great grandchildren Katherine Porter, Jacob Porter and Rosemary Porter, all of Oregon.

No services are planned and arrangements are under the direction of the Austin Funeral Home in Whitefish.
