Cats drop Bigfork on Fields' buzzer beater

| February 16, 2005 10:00 PM

Another buzzer beater kept the Columbia Falls boys basketball team first in conference play Tuesday night.

The Cats dropped Bigfork 52-50 on a three-pointer by J.D. Fields as time expired. It's the third time this season the Cats have won or tied a game on a last-second shot. Earlier this year, they beat Libby on a last-second shot and tied Ronan on a last-second shot, winning that game in overtime.

Bigfork had a lead by one point and had a chance to extend that, but couldn't drop its free throws. With five seconds left, Fields got the ball and drained a 25-footer for the win.

His teammates carried him off the court.

"They keep finding a way to win," said coach Cary Finberg. "Give credit to these guys, they seem to pull them out."

Kevin Boyer led the scoring with 15, followed by Drew Perry, 10, Anthony Minson, eight, Fields, seven, Guy Smith, seven, Nick Beckwith, two, and Justin Heinrichs, two.

The win makes the Cats 7-2 in conference, 14-3 overall, with one regular season game to play against Ronan away Saturday night at 7 p.m. Even though they've clinched the bye, they really want the win.

"We want to go into the divisional tournament on a positive note," Finberg said.

The win against Bigfork clinched either first or second for the Cats in conference play, assuring them a first-round bye, because Polson and Libby play each other this week to wrap up their seasons.

Both teams are 6-3.

On Saturday against Polson, the Cats had their worst game of the season. They didn't shoot well. They didn't rebound well, and Polson out played them, winning 55-48.

The Cats shot just 4-for-23 in the second and third quarters.

Scorers for the Cats were Boyer, 16, Minson, 11, Jace Ladenburg, eight, Drew Perry, three, J.D. Fields, three, and Justin Heinrichs, two.

The JV team beat Bigfork 43-41 and the froshmores beat them 61-46.
